Celebrities clash in new BTA challenge

Happy hackers: Sir Steve Redgrave, left, who captained the celebrities, and Peter Corrigan, who led the journalists, in action during the Hackers Cup at Port Royal in 2011

Celebrities, sportsmen, and journalists from both sides of the Atlantic will face each other in a Ryder Cup-style event in Bermuda this week.

A British team including Darren Anderton, the former England footballer, Robert Pugh, who plays Craster in Game of Thrones, and Peter Fleming, the former professional tennis player, will take on a United States team that includes Tom Slingsby, the Oracle Team USA helmsman, tactician and sailing team manager.

The Hackers Cup, which is being played for the fourth time on the Island, will see the two sides compete over two days at Mid Ocean Club and Port Royal Golf Course.

Organised by the Bermuda Tourism Authority, and sponsored by Goslings, British Airways, and Fairmont Southampton, the event is designed to increase the Island’s exposure overseas.

As well as playing golf, Anderton will be meeting with officials from the Bermuda Football Association, while Wayne Eagling, a Canadian dancer who spent more than 20 years with The Royal Ballet in London, will visit one of the Island’s dance schools.

n The Dare2 Golf Classic at Port Royal Golf Course next week has been switched from women only to now include men.

The tournament, organised by charity Dare2, will see Becky Brewerton, the Ladies British Open champion, playing one hole with each of the eighteen teams. She will also conduct a clinic in the morning.

The Dare2Be tournament will be a traditional shotgun start, captain’s choice event, starting at 12.30pm.

Anyone interested in participating in the clinic or the golf tournament is encouraged to contact Melique Cox at 292 2200 or mxcox@dare2be.bm.
