Rangers expected to dominate awards

Run machine: Stovell had a superb season for Rangers

Southampton Rangers will again feature prominently in the prizes when the Bermuda Cricket Board hold its annual awards ceremony on Saturday night at Gosling’s Wine Cellar.

Rangers won the league as Dion Stovell and Derrick Brangman — the last two MVP winners — played big roles in the title success along with captain Janeiro Tucker.

Stovell was again the top run scorer in the league with 402 and also finished top of the batting averages (57.43) while Tucker was second with 348 runs at 38.67.

Treadwell Gibbons helped Cleveland finish third in the league, scoring 310 runs at an average of 44.20. His only century in the league helped Cleveland inflict the only league loss on Rangers.

Stovell was also eleventh on the most wickets list with 16 wickets at an average of 15.75. The list was headed by Brangman and Kyle Hodsoll of Bailey’s Bay who each claimed 26 wickets, Brangman at an average of 11.92 and Hodsoll at just 7.77, including two five-wicket hauls. Brangman, although down on last season’s 33 dismissals, did claim career-best figures of eight for 40 against St David’s the day before his 28th birthday in August as Rangers virtually wrapped up the league.

Brangman, the Cup Match MVP and Safe Hands Award winner after an outstanding all-round performance for Somerset at Wellington Oval, was also twelfth highest run scorer in the league with 190 runs.

Brian Hall, the captain of promoted Western Stars, will be a strong contender for the First Division MVP award which was won last season by Kijuan Franks of Flatts.

Hall claimed 22 wickets in the league at 7.59, one more wicket than Jamie Smith of Devonshire Recreation Club, while another Devonshire player, Levar Talbot, took 20 wickets.

Chris Douglas, of Devonshire, was the First Division’s top run scorer with 538 runs in his first season at the club to finish with an average of 67.25.

Temiko Wilson was second in the run list, scoring 470 runs at 58.75, while Hall was third with 220 runs in 11 innings.

The ceremony will begin at 7pm with a buffet dinner and cash bar.

Admission is $10 and dress is semi-formal.
