Political leaders from both parties have extended condolences to the family of a 26-year-old man who was shot dead outside Southampton Rangers Club on Friday night.

Michael Dunkley described the “tragic” event as “a harsh reminder of the work that remains to be done to strengthen the fabric of our communities against violence of this kind”.

The Premier, who also serves as the Minister of National Security, added: “Our thoughts and prayers are extended to the family of the victim of this crime as they come to terms with so sudden a loss.

“As we do so and as we unite in supporting them at this difficult time, we can also help them by helping the investigation.

“Witnesses or people with information regarding this crime should contact the police or use the confidential Crime Stoppers number.

“Justice is our communal responsibility and bringing the offenders to justice should be of equal concern in our community.”

Two men were shot outside Southampton Rangers at about 10.40pm on Friday. The 26-year-old man later succumbed to his injuries, while the second man remains in hospital.

Walter Roban, Shadow Public Safety Minister, condemned the shooting and called for anyone with information to come forward.

Mr Roban said: “We extend our deepest and sincere condolences to the family of the young man who was the victim of another act of needless violence. Our thoughts and prayers are also with the second victim as they recover.

“It was heartbreaking to hear of another incidence of violence in our community. It was worse to receive the news that yet another young Bermudian had been shot dead in Southampton Friday night.

“We continue to condemn the acts of those members of our society who think it is appropriate to resort to any violence, but especially gun violence.

“This same gun violence has become a blight in our community that we must work to eradicate, and we continue to join with the police and the community in appealing for anyone with information to come forward.”

Anyone with any information about the shooting can contact the Serious Crime Unit on 247-1739 or the confidential Crime Stoppers hotline on 800-8477.
