Sprinter Lewis misses out on 800 finals

Making history: Lewis missed out on reaching the 800 final

Jessica Lewis, the Bermuda wheelchair sprinter, missed out on reaching the T53 800 metres final at the IPC Athletics World Championships in Doha, Qatar, yesterday.

The 22-year-old posted a time of 2min 3.40sec to finish sixth in her heat. It was her final race of the competition at the Suhaim Bin Hamad Stadium.

She was the eleventh quickest competitor overall, with the top eight advancing to today’s final.

Lewis made history in Doha as the first Bermudian to win a medal at the championships after coming third in the 100 final on Saturday.

Competing against the best wheelchair sprinters in the world, she posted a time of 17.40sec in her favourite event.

“We set our goals for the year,” said Lewis, who won gold at last summer’s Parapan Am Games in Toronto.

“We planned the work and we’ve worked the plan.

“We don’t race for medals, we race our plan and if we do everything right the medal will come.”

About 1,400 athletes from 100 countries are competing in Doha in the final major international event ahead of next year’s Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, a competition Lewis has already qualified for in the 100 and 400.
