Brooks blows past Lambert

Winning start: Towlson

The Bermuda Clay Court Championships got off to a stunning start on Sunday when top seed Jacklyn Lambert was blown away by Ashley Brooks in straight sets.

The 6-1, 6-1 result at Coral Beach has thrown the women’s singles wide open, as six top players vie for the $2,000 prize for winning the title.

In other top matches, Neal Towlson, the Coral Beach & Tennis Club professional, teamed up with Caitlin Gordon in the mixed doubles to get past Paul Mosquera, of Chile, and Eileen Stirling, of America, 6-0, 6-3.

Brooks and Imani Phillips teamed up in the final match of the day to overcome Leslie Flynn of the United States and Bermudian Christine McHarg in a hard fought 6-1, 7-5 women’s doubles match.

Yesterday Erika Bove, of Venezuela, won twice in the singles to move to the top of table in the women’s round robin competition.

Today, the action heats up further when Lambert takes on Bove in the singles, while men’s top seed Jensen Bascome takes on unseeded Dean Mello in the quarter-finals and Gavin Manders, the second-seed, faces off against Sam Butler as the race for the men’s title gets under way in earnest.
