King and Walsh stay calm under pressure

Stayed calm: Walsh and King

Danny King and Billy Walsh held off a spirited charge from Luc Boisvert and Louis-Pierre Godin to claim the inaugural Nike Golf PGA Team Championship of Canada at Mid Ocean Club.

King and Walsh shot a nine-under-par 62 in yesterday’s final round scramble to finish three shots ahead of the field on 21-under.

Boisvert and Godin pushed them all the way, as did Gordon Burns and Kier Smith, with the teams from Montreal and Ontario, shooting identical 14-under rounds of 57.

In the end, however, the five-shot gap that King and Walsh opened up between themselves and the rest on Wednesday was too big for the field to close.

Under pressure though, Walsh, who is the PGA of Canada’s top-ranked player, and King, who is fourth on the list, kept the ball in play and never let up over the closing holes.

“We’re a good fit because the strength of my game is keeping the ball in play and in the fairway,” Walsh said.

“So when I do that, it frees Danny up with the driver and that’s one of his best weapons.”

Ian Doig, a regular visitor to Bermuda, and his partner Ed Maunder finished fourth, while the team of Billy Houle and Francis Tanguay rounded out the top five.
