Puzzled by price of some groceries

Counting the cost: a reader says the mark-up on some groceries is too high, even taking shipping into account (File photograph)

Dear Sir,

The prices of some items on our supermarket shelves seem to be reasonable, considering that all of these items must come in by ship.

However, there are some items for which the local prices defy any logical shipping increase.

For example, a couple of weeks ago I purchased Thomas’s Original English Muffins in New Hampshire for $2 for six pieces. The same item is priced here in Bermuda for $7.25 at one retailer and $6.29 at another.

And bear in mind that the US supermarket is making a profit at $2.

Sincerely, Puzzled Consumer
