Whenever Leroy Gibbons has a microphone in his hand you can bet it’s going to be a “magic moment”. Tomorrow night looks set to be no exception.

The veteran crooner promises fans will get “all the hits and pre-releases”, including his popular cover of This Magic Moment at the Veterans in Action concert at the BAA gymnasium.

The dancehall artist is working on two albums in Britain with Blacka Dread and One Love Label.

He exploded on to the dancehall scene in the mid-1980s with his strong voice and lovers’ rock style.

“Gregory Isaacs told me I could sing,” Gibbons said. “I went to a dance in Canada and the selector, Delbert Williams, called me up and the rest is history.”

He started cutting dubplates, or specials, for Arrows International sound system. That led to a meeting with King Jammy’s sound system; the latter recorded some of Gibbons’s biggest hits.

“Arrows was the man that made Jammy notice me,” Gibbons said. “He sent me to Canada to do some specials for a four-sound clash.

“Had it not been for the clash, Jamaica wouldn’t know of me.”

He performed over Jammy’s sound system regularly and recorded the popular album This Magic Moment for the label. The singer recalls hearing the first song he ever recorded, on the radio in Britain.

“It was a welcoming moment,” he said. “I was there with Arrows in Hawkeye Record Store in London.”

Thirty years on, he lives in Canada but is still performing with such legendary sound systems as King Sturgav in Jamaica.

Asked if he ever dreamed he would still be on the stage so many years later, he said: “Everything was done well to ensure the longevity, but I never expected them to have that effect still.”
