PHC put trophy record on the line

PHC Zebras will put their impressive Dudley Eve Trophy record on the line in tomorrow’s final against Robin Hood at Wellington Oval.

The contest will pit Kyle Lightbourne, the Hood head coach, and Antwan Russell, the Hood striker, against their former club.

Lightbourne’s assistant, Casey Butterfield, is also a former PHC player having represented the club at youth level.

Zebras are chasing a seventh title, which would draw them level with North Village for the most wins in the tournament. Hood, meanwhile, are making their first appearance in the final and second overall in a major cup final.

To date, PHC are the only team to win the competition three-times on the trot, and also the only team to win the showpiece by the toss of a coin after the 1981-82 final.

That year’s final against Somerset Trojans ended deadlocked at 4-4 on aggregate after two legs, and a subsequent penalty shoot-out was abandoned because of poor lighting with the teams still tied.

Since then the tournament has been modified, and is now contested between the top six Premier Division teams from the previous season, rather than the original format which was held over the Christmas holidays and featured the top four clubs at the halfway stage of the season.

The last time PHC appeared in the Dudley Eve Trophy final was during the 2009-10 season under Lightbourne.

On that occasion Zebras lost to Village 2-1 in a penalty shoot-out at the National Sports Centre. Cecoy Robinson, the PHC captain, Casey Castle, Jahnai Raynor, Shakir Smith and Kevin Lambe remain in the team from that final.

Tomorrow’s game in the East End will be the first meeting between PHC and Robin Hood this season, with both expected to be at full strength.

Robin Hood can also call upon the defensive talents of Corey Boyce, who is available after his fight on Saturday night.

PHC reached their ninth Dudley Eve Trophy final after handing Dandy Town, the two times defending champions, a 2-0 defeat in the semi-finals.

Hood, meanwhile, advanced to their first Dudley Eve Trophy final after upstaging Somerset Trojans, last season’s beaten finalists, in a penalty shoot-out.

Kick off for tomorrow’s final is at 2:30pm.
