Bragging rights at stake for Oracle pair

Jimmy Spithill has joined the list of America’s Cup sailors to compete in next month’s Amlin International Moth Championship in the Great Sound.

The Oracle Team USA skipper plans to compete in a few races before he leaves for a meeting for the team principals of the six teams registered for the 35th America’s Cup.

“I may miss the end of the series, but I am definitely sure I will be racing out there for as much as I can be,” Spithill said.

More than 20 America’s Cup sailors have registered for next month’s regatta, which will run from December 5 to 11, with Tom Slingsby and Kyle Langford, Spithill’s Oracle team-mates, also among the field.

Spithill and Slingsby, the Oracle sailing team manager, will be racing a lot against each other in the upcoming weeks.

After the Moth regatta the pair will switch from inshore to offshore mode when they compete in the Sydney Hobart Race, which begins on Boxing Day.

Spithill is competing on board the supermaxi Comanche, owned by Jim and Kristy Clark, while Slingsby is on Anthony Bell’s supermaxi, Perpetual Loyal, which took Newport Bermuda Race line honours in 2008, when the yacht was named Speedboat.

“We will be going for bragging rights and we should get some good racing,” Spithill said.

Spithill, who is making his fourth appearance in the classic 628 nautical mile race, came second with Comanche last year.

“The last one we were second, and so hopefully we can pull a win off this time around,” he said.

The Sydney Hobart race will feature 111 yachts, including Robert Oatley’s supermaxi Wild Oats XI, which secured line honours for a record seventh time under the guidance of Mark Richards last year.

Wild Oats XI is the most successful yacht in the 70-year history of the Sydney Hobart race, and holder of the race record which stands at 1 day, 18 hours, 23 minutes 12 seconds.

•Mark Watson and crew of Tiburon placed among the top half of the fleet at last week’s Etchells World Championships in Hong Kong.

The local skipper finished 21st among the 43-boat fleet, with a best showing of ninth, sailing with crew Andreas Josenhans and Chris Busch.

Tim Patton, the only other local sailor competing at the regatta, finished 33rd on board Bill Steele’s yacht, Chelsea Lady.

Skip Dieball, the American skipper, and crew of Aretas won the regatta by two-points over Steve Benjamin and crew of Scimitar.
