Salvationists marched along Front Street yesterday in celebration of the organisation’s 150th birthday.

Members saluted world leader General Commissioner André Cox at the Flagpole as they made their way from the Cabinet Office to the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club.

“It’s a march of witness which is part of the boundless celebrations,” Mr Cox told The Royal Gazette.

Calvin Ming, a fourth generation Salvation Army stalwart, added: “It’s a chance for many of the Salvationists on the Island and from overseas to march together as a witness to God and thanksgiving.”

Members of the community also came out to show their support for the organisation and the work it does.

“They mean a great deal to me,” said Garn Fubler, a recovering drug addict. “I can’t put it in words how grateful I am for the Salvation Army and Harbour Light.”

The Hamilton Parish resident added: “I went to Harbour Light and they helped me in every way. They gave me structure back in my life.”

Rosemary Phillips, a retired teacher and former chaplain at Harbour Light, said: “This is a very exciting time for the Salvation Army. To have our leader come is motivational and energising.”

General André Cox is visiting from Britain with his wife, Commissioner Silvia Cox, the world president of women’s ministries, and both were at the march.

“It’s awesome,” Ms Phillips added. “I got to meet the general but it also lets Bermuda know yet again what we’re about and that’s going for people who others throw away.”
