Medal hopefuls Sentwali Woolridge, Reyel Bowen and Krista Dyer will launch their bids when competition at the 2015 World Wushu Championships commences today in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Woolridge and Bowen are competing in the male 75 and 85kg divisions while Dyer is in the female 65kg category.

Garon Wilkinson, the team’s head coach and president of the Bermuda Sanshou Association, confirmed yesterday that the trio had each made weight in their respective divisions and we’re raring to go.

Bowen, who has been seeded ninth his weight division, will face an opponent from Honduras in his opening match, sixth seeded Woolridge will take on an opponent from Belarus while tenth seeded Dyer will lock horns with an opponent from the Philippines in her opening bout at the Istora Senayan.

Bermuda’s team this year is the smallest to represent the Island at the World Wushu Championships which are organised by the International Wushu Federation and held every two years.

Wushu originated in China who have won the most medals, 139, at the championships which was first held in that country in 1991.

Woolridge’s cousin Jermal, who is also accompanying the team in Jakarta, became Bermuda’s first medal winner at the Wushu World Championships when he claimed silver in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in 2013.

Jermal, who is a mentor of Bowen, is unable to compete at this year’s championships due to injury.
