Port Royal named Island’s top course

Island's best: Port Royal was recognised for its impressive facilities at the World Golf Awards

Port Royal has been named the Island’s best golf course for the second consecutive year at the World Golf Awards.

The publicly-owned facility beat out Mid Ocean Club, Tucker’s Point, Riddell’s Bay and Belmont Hills for the award, which was presented at a gala dinner in Portugal last week.

The Fairmont Southampton was also recognised for its links with the game, being named Bermuda’s best hotel for golfers.

“We are excited and honoured that Port Royal Golf Course has been voted, for the second consecutive year, the best in Bermuda,” a Port Royal spokesman said.

“We are extremely proud of our facility and this award solidifies the hard work that our staff put into our product.”

As an Island, Bermuda was ranked third in the Caribbean, with Dominican Republic being voted the region’s best golf destination of 2015. The award for best golf course in the Caribbean went to Casa de Campo, in Dominican, with Sandals Emerald Bay, in The Bahamas, named as the best golf hotel in the region.

• Bermuda Golf Association has put a new Thanksgiving tournament on the calendar for this month.

The Thanksgiving Challenge on the Hill, a 36-hole stroke play event, will take place at Turtle Hill Golf Club on Saturday, November 28.

This month’s tournament is an ideal opportunity to qualify for the Bacardi National Par 3 Championships, which take place in January with fields being limited to the top ten qualifiers, plus ties, in each division.

Entry to the Thanksgiving Challenge us $60, including cart and light refreshments will be provided.

BGA officials believe this will be a popular event and are urging golfers that want to play, to sign up as soon as possible.
