The First Division is setting up for an intriguing promotion race with a slew of teams in contention.

Two second-tier matches are scheduled for tomorrow, with Ireland Island Rangers hosting St George’s at Somerset and Flanagan’s Onions playing X-Roads at Goose Gosling Field. A win against bottom team X-Roads would take Onions into first place overnight.

St David’s, the leaders, host third-place Somerset Eagles in Sunday’s top match. Just three points separate the top four teams with St David’s now the only unbeaten side in the division.

Eagles are a team on the move under coach Marlon Rojas and their next two matches against St David’s and then Flanagan’s will be key matches.

“He’s been working with the team and the guys are buying in to what we’re trying to instil,” Roger Lee, the Eagles assistant coach, said. “We’re hoping to have a say [in the promotion race], absolutely.”

BAA Wanderers meet Wolves in a mid-table clash while Paget Lions host Young Men’s Social Club at Southampton Oval.

“It’s not like last season with two teams running away and then we came back into it,” Kenny Thompson, the BAA coach said. “This time there are a lot more teams that can be in a position to be promoted.

“It’s still a long way to go, we’re certainly in a better position than we were last year when it proved we could be further behind and still come back into it. This time we’re not so far behind and we have to come back strong on Sunday to get back into the race.”
