Unpredictability leaves title race wide open

New captain: Simmons

The Premier Division title race has opened up after last weekend with Dandy Town dropping their first points, and Robin Hood moving into second place having handed Devonshire Colts their first defeat of the season.

Hornets rescued a point late on against Southampton Rangers in a thrilling 3-3 draw in the last few minutes at Southampton Oval.

That draw enabled Hood to move within a point of the leaders ahead of their home match on Sunday, against bottom team Devonshire Cougars who have lost five straight games.

However, results have been unpredictable so far and Kyle Lightbourne, the Hood coach, knows Cougars represent a threat despite their lowly position.

“I watched them against Somerset Trojans [on Monday night] and they’ve got some good players, they’re just not getting the rub of the green right now,” Lightbourne said.

“They took the lead and that woke Somerset up and then they couldn’t handle Somerset’s comeback.”

Town will look to bounce back from last weekend’s draw when Boulevard visit St John’s Field on Sunday. Drewonde Bascome led the Hornets fightback against Rangers with a goal on his debut after coming on as a substitute.

Angelo Simmons, the new Dandy Town captain, will relish playing against his former team. Boulevard, with only one win in five outings, remain just above the relegation zone after last weekend’s defeat to North Village, one of only two unbeaten teams in the league.

Two straight wins have lifted Village to fourth place, just four points behind the leaders. Richard Todd, their coach, believes the team is gaining momentum at just the right time.

“We have a big squad and when we can insert players from the bench like Demetre Daniels and Shayne Hollis, it says we have a lot of quality here,” Todd said.

“The three points build confidence and the confidence and momentum will start to carry, then the players will come on board. It will be good for the fans as well.”

Village head to Southampton Oval to meet a resurgent Rangers side who will be without goalkeeper Jason Smith who was sent off late in the game against Town.

Colts entertain PHC Zebras at Police Field, both teams coming off disappointing results last weekend when Colts lost to ten-man Robin Hood and PHC sharing the points in a goalless draw with Hamilton Parish who picked up their first point of the campaign. Parish take on Somerset Trojans at Somerset Cricket Club tomorrow night.
