Chayce Smith broke a three-way tie for first place to win the men’s open category in the Bermuda National Athletics Association Cross-Country Series, while Deon Breary and Laurie Orchard tied for first in the women’s masters during the final races on Saturday at Chaplin Bay.

Smith went into the race tied on 20 points with Chefton Hall and Larry Marshall.

He took first place to win the series by four points in the absence of Marshall, with Hall finishing third behind Darico Clarke.

Smith had a winning time of 28min 48.3sec over the 4.3-mile course, comfortably ahead of Clarke in 31:40.7 while Hall was further back in 35:48.2. Jose Miranda was fourth in 35:56.7.

Tamika Miranda was the only women’s open competitor, with that division already decided by Rose-Anna Hoey’s 14-point lead going into the race. Miranda finished in 28:21.3.

Deon Breary’s victory was not enough to give her the series in the women’s masters where she and Orchard finished tied on 40 points.

Orchard was leading by two points going into the race and her second-place finish was enough to prevent Breary from winning outright. Breary won the 3.3-mile race in 25:38 while Orchard finished a distant second in 29:29.8. Kim Raymond, who finished in 34:45.4, completed the top three to finish third in the series on 22 points.

Omari Hart clinched victory and the series in the men’s masters, breaking the tape in 23:29.5 to finish six points ahead of Scott Neil who came third. Dean Smith was second in 27:52.7 and third in the series.

Among the juniors, Ashley Irby took the girls’ under-17 title with her third win in the series, breaking a tie for first with Mikaela Outerbridge who could only manage fourth on Saturday. Irby ran the course in 26:25.9, 36 seconds ahead of Lynsey Palmer in second place.

Irby finished the series with 30 points while Palmer had 26 points and Outerbridge 24.

Quincy Kuzyk took advantage of the absence of leader Aaron Jacobs to win the boys under-17 title with a close finish. Kuzyk trailed Jacobs by two points going into the race and edged out Max de ste Croix by just three seconds with his time of 23:32.3. Jacobs finished second in the series, Malik Joell third and De ste Croix fourth.

In the girls’ under-15, Kayla Raymond capitalised on the absence of leaders Selah Tuzo and Jessie Marshall to win the race and the series by just two points over Tuzo. Raymond had a winning time of 18:33.8 in the 2.2-mile race while Koa Goodchild placed second on 19:13.6 and fourth in the series.

Ryan Outerbridge took the boys’ under-14 title with his third win of the series to finish eight points ahead of Iziah Tucker who was second on Saturday. Outerbridge had a winning time of 15:11.5 while Tucker finished in 15:24.

Jade Johnston won the girls’ under-12 title in a close finish with Tesyah-Mahle Astwood. The pair were tied on 26 points going into the final race, which Johnston won by six seconds in 8:50.9 over the 1.1-mile course. Astwood was close behind in 8:55.6.

Kaahzi Sealey won the boys’ under-12 title after finishing second behind Sancho Smith on Saturday. Sealey went into the race with a four-point lead over Tommy Marshall who did not compete.

Ramiah Brangman took the under-10 girls’ title with her victory as Katherine Bean-Rosarie finished second and second in the series. Rajae Whitter and Elijah Bean tied for first in the boys’ under-10 after Bean finished third to close the six-point lead Whitter had going into the race. Whitter did not compete as Max Reid claimed his second straight victory.

The National Cross Country Championships are scheduled for December 5 at the Botanical Gardens.
