Students engage in battle of the books

Turning pages: Warwick Academy’s primary students have voted for their favourite books

Reading for pleasure is encouraged all year at all levels of primary school, but it is the main objective of Warwick Academy’s annual Primary Book Week.

This year’s programme focused on the oral promotion of favourite titles and the pleasure of sharing good reads.

Throughout this special week, primary students worked collaboratively on a preselected title, imagining ways to inform and entice potential readers.

The event culminated with friendly “Battle of the Books” presentations in the assembly hall across year groups, and students were invited to vote for their favourite reads.

Maria Woods, the head of primary, said: “All presentations were impressive and even our shyer students stood up and did their bit — it was great to see.

“These kinds of opportunities can help students to develop their speaking and listening skills. That is why we try to plan them into our curriculum”.

Since the conclusion of the event, Mrs Wolffe, Warwick Academy’s librarian, has witnessed an increase in the circulation of the winning titles.

“Library users developed a genuine enthusiasm not only for the winning books but for the winning authors,” she said.

This phenomenon has also been observed by Mrs Jabour, the head of literacy and Y3 teacher, in the classroom.

So, parents, if you are looking for age-appropriate and engaging books for your child, please do not look any further. Trust Warwick Academy Primary readers and select a book from the following “Battle of the Books” winning titles:
