Estwanik on right track after injury

Road to recovery: top runner Estwanik

Chris Estwanik is feeling pretty good a couple of days after putting his sore Achilles to the test during Sunday’s Bacardi 8K, but the top distance runner is still determined not to rush back after his injury.

Estwanik, out of action for four months since representing Bermuda at the NatWest Island Games in Jersey, where he won two gold medals, has been recovering from the Achilles injury. On Sunday he decided to test the injury in the Bacardi race, winning in 25min 56secs for his fourth title.

“It feels OK, it’s day by day and I’m just easing back into it, really,” Estwanik said. “I’m hoping to take it one day at a time.”

The 35-year-old has been hit by injuries in the last couple of years and he is not quite sure where he picked up the latest one which is on his right foot.

“I think it is just years of overuse, really, just a lot of years of running,” he said.

At his best Estwanik is unstoppable on the local scene and on Sunday he looked comfortable as he led home Evan Naude and Spencer Butterfield, with Naude finishing second in 28:33, followed by Butterfield in 29:12.

Estwanik had expressed interest in representing Bermuda in the marathon at next year’s Olympics in Rio, but is not looking too far ahead as he continues his recovery from the injury.

“The big goals are very much in the back at the moment, I’m just trying to enjoy running again and taking it one day at a time,” he said, not ruling out competing during the Bermuda Marathon Weekend in January.

“I may consider doing it but I’m just going to see how the training goes. I’m not going to start setting any goals until I see how things progress.”

Estwanik has ruled himself out of the National Cross-Country Championships on December 5.
