Lambe has best of bad weekend

Opening goal: Lambe

Reggie Lambe had the best of a largely poor weekend for Bermuda’s overseas professionals.

The midfielder scored the first goal in Mansfield’s 3-1 win away at Barnet, a result that moved them up to seventh in Sky Bet League Two.

Mansfield rode their luck towards the end as both teams ended the day with ten men.

Lambe’s lob put Mansfield ahead before Josh Clarke, the Barnet right back, was sent off for a second yellow card.

Matt Green, Mansfield’s top scorer, slotted in from Craig Westcarr’s pass before John Akinde pulled one back for Barnet from the penalty spot.

Chris Clements, the Mansfield midfielder, was then sent off for a second booking, but Michael Nelson’s own goal sealed the win for Town.

Lambe’s countrymen, Nahki Wells and Rai Simons, had worse days, with Huddersfield Town and Chesterfield both losing.

Chesterfield’s 4-0 defeat at home to Swindon, which Simons played the entirety of, also cost Dean Saunders, the manager, his job after just six months in charge.

The 51-year-old was only appointed in May, but the club are now sixteenth in the table and are only four points above the relegation zone.

Saunders lost 11 of his 20 league games in charge, and Chesterfield’s last league victory was a 3-0 win over Southend on 20 October.

Saunders succeeded Paul Cook, who signed Simons, before leaving to take over at Portsmouth.

While Chesterfield are hovering above the relegation zone, Huddersfield dropped into the bottom three of the Championship on Saturday after they lost 2-0 at home to Middlesbrough.

Adam Clayton, who left Huddersfield to join Middlesbrough in January, returned to score against his old club, shrugging off a Wells challenge before driving the ball past Jed Steer, the goalkeeper.

Wells tried to make amends, hitting a free kick against the cross bar, before forcing Dimi Konstantopoulos, the Middlesbrough goalkeeper, into a smart save with another effort.

Huddersfield dominated for large parts of the game, but could not find a way past Konstantopoulos, and Emilio Nsue wrapped up the three points six minutes from time.

“We continue to take steps in the right direction. The result isn’t a true reflection of the game,” Wells said on twitter afterwards.

His sentiments were echoed by David Wagner, the Huddersfield manager, who was taking charge of the side for the first time at John Smith’s Stadium.

“The result was very different to the performance,” he said. “I was very pleased with the way we played.

“The way the team played is another step in the right direction and I am sure this team has a good future.

“Middlesbrough only had two chances in this game and we saw which team was better and which team created more chances. Sometimes in football you don’t get the result you deserve.”
