A 17-year-old boy was shot last night after two men on a motorcycle opened fire on a small crowd.

A group of six young men, all between the ages of 16 and 20, were sitting on a wall at a property on Morgan Road, Warwick, just before 9pm when the two men pulled up beside them on the bike, police said.

The teenager was shot in the leg, and was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.

“At this point, the injuries do not appear to be life-threatening,” said police spokesman Dwayne Caines.

“Police are in the area, they are canvassing the relevant neighbours and they are looking for anyone that may have information.”

He added that neighbours had indicated that the area was a popular place for the young men to congregate.

No more details about the attackers or their vehicle were available by press time last night.

Asked if the police were concerned about the possibility of retaliatory attacks, Mr Caines said: “We would obviously hope that there are no retaliatory attacks.

“We will have officers from our CAT [community action team] unit come tomorrow and talk to the neighbours and have messages of reassurance.

“We also have officers from the serious crime unit to start the investigation.

“We are very familiar with this process, and the process has now commenced.”

Officers remained on the scene after 10pm, speaking to neighbours and searching the street near the junction with Morgan Lane for evidence.

• Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to call the Bermuda Police Service on 295-0011 or the confidential Crime Stoppers hotline on 800 8477.
