Bermuda’s first baby of 2016, Skyler Baker, arrived “right on time” on New Year’s Day.

“He’s doing great — a lovely, healthy, happy baby,” said Shikiyla Hendrickson, who had her first child with partner Reginald Baker.

Weighing 7lb 1.3oz, Skyler was born shortly before 6pm on Friday as his “very excited” father looked on.

Meaning “protection”, his name also evokes the colour of bright skies: “It was one of those things on my mind — the bright, blue, vibrant sky,” his mother said.

“It gives a happy vibe. I wanted him to be a happy person.”

Her father, Calvin Hendrickson, added: “It’s my favourite colour too.”

The family, from Southampton, were due to go back home yesterday, where Mrs Hendrickson said they would get down to “relaxing and enjoying each other’s company”.

Skyler was a picture of contentment on his first day, although his mother said he didn’t enjoy getting his first bath.

Asked if she planned on adding to their new family, Mrs Hendrickson said: “I will probably have more — just not right away.”
