Celebrating artist Alfred Birdsey

Looking ahead: this Alfred Birdsey painting, dated 1991, seems to show America’s Cup catamarans in the Great Sound, a reader writes (Photograph supplied)

Dear Sir,

My grandson was having dinner with us last night and he commented on an oil painting hanging on the wall.

We realised that apart from being a well-known artist, Alfred Birdsey was always at the forefront with his experimentation in the art form.

He was also a good yachtsman and now we appreciate he was a visionary, anticipating as far back as 1991 the America’s Cup.

Here is a view, looking towards Two Rock Passage, with America’s Cup yachts in the Great Sound!

As we continue to celebrate Alfred’s life and remember him (he died 20 years ago this month), I wonder what he would have thought of the America’s Cup and what images he would have captured in his inimitable style!

A happy new year to you and your readers.
