Please clean up roadsides before races

Hitting the road: runners pass John Smith’s Bay during last year’s Bermuda Marathon Weekend (File photograph)

Dear Sir,

It is January: time for the Bermuda International Marathon Weekend.

Before the visiting athletes take to our roads, can the works and engineering department not send out a crew to clean up Pitts Bay Road?

For the past three years, the roadsides have looked a disgrace: debris, weeds, grass, etc, have been there so long that areas are completely covered over with moss. And that takes more than a year to grow.

No street cleaner has been seen here for years. It is an embarrassment for the residents here.

The worst part is from Smatt’s Cycle Livery going north to Westmeath Residential Home.

Inside certain properties trees and shrubs have not been cut back, but have been allowed to hang out into the road, creating a dangerous situation for pedestrians.

This is a heavily travelled main road without a sidewalk and one takes one’s life into one’s hands walking along this thoroughfare.

Let’s make sure Pitts Bay Road looks as pristine as some other roads on our Island, well in time before the Race Weekend.
