Financial experts will give advice about money management at a Banking & Budgeting Seminar

•Learn from financial experts about money management at a Banking & Budgeting Seminar on Thursday, January 28.

Start the New Year off on the right foot by learning how effective budgeting and banking can help you to maintain control of your finances and achieve your goals.

This seminar is being held at The Sunshine League PLACE (Personal Learning Assistance Centre) at 27 King Street from 5.30pm until 7pm and is aimed at those who are living independently for the first time and need some expert advice on handling your finances. This seminar is also ideal for anyone who has ever struggled to balance a budget, keep up with bill payments, eliminate credit card debt, meet financial goals or establish a consistent savings plan.

•The Budgeting Seminar is being presented by Mr Kent Bascome, Chief Financial Officer of The West End Development Corporation. The Banking Seminar is being presented by Mr. Alexander Butterfield, Relationship Manager at the Bank of Butterfield.

The cost is $10 for under 18s and $20 for persons aged 18 and over. Payment is by cash only.

•The Bermuda Zoological Society invites you to join them for the first installment of their lecture series, Hurricanes 101: A Bermuda Focus on Thursday, January 28th.

The lecture will begin at 7pm in the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo Education Classroom. Hurricanes have shaped Bermuda’s history both culturally and geologically on a fairly annual basis. This lecture is designed to offer an introduction to how, where and when tropical cyclones (including hurricanes) form, what mechanisms make them move (or track) in different patterns, where the strongest winds are located, how tropical storms differ from winter gales, and how to interpret, and therefore act, on the various levels of local watches and warnings.

•Sure to be of great interest to anyone interested in the marine environment, including snorkelers and divers, the latest in the series of BUEI Talks will be All “Sea” Creatures Great and Small by Ron Lucas and Warren De Klerk on Thursday, January 28th.

Ron Lucas and Warren De Klerk are two of Bermuda’s most prolific underwater photographers. They have travelled widely to extend their portfolios of exotic reef species and will present and discuss their most interesting images. This is an opportunity to learn about species ranging from the largest fish in the ocean to critters under 1 centimetre in size, many of which can only be found in the centre of the Coral Triangle – Indonesia and the Philippines. Scientists speculate that following the Ice Age reef fish in the world were restocked from the Coral Triangle as these oceans were least effected by the big freeze.

Ron Lucas will be available to sign copies of Bermuda Reef Portraits. If you have not yet got your copy of this book, it is available from the Oceans Gift Shop.

The lecture will start at 7.30pm in the Tradewinds Auditorium and Harbourfront are offering a 10% discount (food only) to anyone dining there before or after the event. Reservations are available from 5pm for the sushi bar and the full menu will be available from 6pm – please mention the lecture when booking to avail of the discount and note that it cannot be combined with any other special offers. •Celebrating local poets and authors, the Bermuda Literary Festival will take place on Saturday, February 6th.

This special showcase event celebrating and “Keeping Bermuda Culture Alive” will run from 6pm until 9pm in the Dr. E.F. Gordon Memorial Hall in the BIU building.

With a vibrant musical introduction, the audience is lured into a world of poetry using Bermudian and American poetry to rescue a church that is about to close. Only a packed house can give the answer as the Poet Priest (Glen Iris) takes to the stage with Vernette Dorian, and Dale Butler makes an historic return, since his 1978 debut in a Hasting’s Saltus play.

Vendors will be present to sell their books, while poets and authors can talk about their works. A light meal will be served.

•The Mariner’s Club invite all you wiseguys to their latest Murder Mystery Dinner with the theme, The Mafia Murders on Saturday, February 6th.

The evening will begin with cocktails at 6.30pm, followed by the dinner and show at 7.30pm sharp. Dinner will be a 3 course dinner catered by Mad Hatters Restaurant.

Fancy dress is not compulsory but there will be prizes for the Best Male/Female Costumes.
