A 25-year-old man who crashed his bike into a Belco pole while driving drunk has been fined and taken off the roads.

Dylan Marshall, of Pembroke, pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court this morning to driving on Pitts Bay Road while over the legal blood-alcohol limit.

The court heard that police officers attended a single-vehicle accident near the junction with Turnstile Lane at about 2.35am on Sunday.

They found Marshall and his bike lying in the middle of the road. He was being attended to by two members of the public and told the officers that he was not injured.

However, he was unable to stand up on his own. The officers also noted that his eyes were glazed and his breath smelled of alcohol.

When they asked if he had been drinking, Marshall replied that he’d had seven beers.

The officers determined that he had been heading towards Spanish Point when he lost control of his cycle and crashed into the Belco police.

He was arrested and a breathalyser test at Hamilton Police Station showed that he had 238 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood — almost three times the legal limit of 80mg.

In court today, Marshall read a statement apologising to the court and all of Bermuda for the offence.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo handed him a $1,200 fine and disqualified him from driving for 18 months.
