Shooting victim flown off Island for care

Crime scene: Court Street after police cordoned off the area heading towards Tills Hill following reports of gunfire(Photograph by Akil Simmons)

A victim in one of two shootings on Friday has been flown off Island for medical treatment.

The 20-year-old from Pembroke was reportedly shot on Friday morning near the junction of North Shore Road and Overview Hill.

The police have said that he had been turning onto Overview Hill when two males wearing dark clothes and riding a dark-coloured motorcycle opened fire. The suspects then left the scene, travelling east along North Shore Road.

Less than eight hours later police responded to another firearm incident in which two men were spotted chasing a third individual through Court Street and onto Angle Street, shooting the weapon near the intersection.

According to people nearby, the trio ran past bystanders and groups of people socialising.

Court Street residents told The Royal Gazette yesterday that they were stunned by the brazen nature of the attack. One, who asked not to be named, said: “For them to do that in the middle of the street tells you what they think. And the other one was in broad daylight. They just don’t care.”

Another member of the public said: “The government needs to do something about all of this. We’re getting a robbery with a gun every week now in Bermuda. We can’t live like this.

“People need jobs. People need to get to work. Then they won’t be doing this foolishness.”

In a statement last night, PLP Deputy Leader David Burt and Walter Roban, the Shadow Minister for Home Affairs, said they were shocked by the recent outbreak of firearm offences, also noting an armed robbery at the Van Buren Marine Station in Flatts on Thursday. The statement said: “The shootings which occurred on the North Shore, Pembroke where multiple shots where fired resulting in serious injuries to the victim, and Court Street, which fortunately saw no injures, are frightening and concerning. The amount of violence committed over the past two months is unacceptable, and we stand together with every Bermudian and all residents in absolute condemnation of these acts.

“Our well wishes go out to all persons affected by these heinous crimes, and we appeal in unison with government and the Bermuda Police Service for any persons with knowledge or information that can help with the investigations of these incidents to come forward.”

Anyone with information about either incident are urged to contact police on 295-0011 or call the confidential Crime Stoppers hotline on 800-8477
