Wollmann suffers setback in Miami

Wollmann has dropped down the rankings

Cecilia Wollmann and Cameron Pimentel, Bermuda’s Olympic Games hopefuls, lost precious ground at the Sailing World Cup in Miami yesterday.

Wollmann posted finishes of 29th and seventeenth to slip 26 places from eighth to 34th in the 81-boat women’s Laser Radial fleet.

Her compatriot Pimentel also endured a tough day sailing in 17-19 southerly breezes as he fell ten places from 54th to 64th in the 98-boat full Laser rig fleet after being scored with a Did Not Finish.

It could not be confirmed whether the sailor suffered damaged rigging or capsized.

In order to achieve their qualifying objectives, Wollmann and Pimentel must finish as the top North American sailors yet to qualify for Rio in their respective fleets.

Should both sailors fall short in their Olympic bids there remains the possibility they could earn a wild-card to Rio.

Marit Bouwmeester, of the Netherlands, leads the women’s Laser Radial fleet while compatriot Rutger van Schaardenburg is the leader in the full Laser rig.

The Sailing World Cup, which runs until January 30, features more than 780 Olympic and Paralympic sailors from 64 countries competing across ten Olympic classes. Saturday’s Medal Races will be televised live.
