DeRosa shatters decades-old records

Raising the bar: DeRosa

One gigantic throw of the discus was all that it took for Tiara DeRosa to break two records that have stood for more than 30 years.

In doing so DeRosa also reached the Carifta Games qualifying standard on Saturday at the Flyers Track Meet at the National Sports Centre.

The 17-year-old Berkeley student shattered longstanding records held by Branwen Smith (King) since 1977 and Sonya Smith since 1981 in qualifying for the Carifta Games in the Under-20 girls.

DeRosa’s throw of 45.02 metres broke Branwen Smith’s national record of 42.60, a record that has stood since May 1977.

The impressive throw also broke the national junior record set by Sonya Smith of 37.06 which has been standing since July 1981.

One achievement by Smith-King will never be broken, that being the first Bermuda athlete to win a medal at Carifta Games.

She achieved the feat at the inaugural Games in Barbados in 1972, taking Bermuda’s only gold with a winning throw of 9.75 metres in the shot.

Bermuda also won two silver and two bronze at the Games in Barbados.
