Island Games quartet honoured

Rider of the Year: Dominique Mayho

Dominique Mayho and the NatWest Island Games women’s road team were named as the Male and Female Riders of the Year during the Bermuda Bicycle Association’s awards presentation on Saturday at Flanagan’s Pub and Restaurant.

It was yet another strong year for Mayho who remains the man to beat when he is on the Island.

Wins at the Road Race Championships and Presidents Cup, plus a gold medal at the Island Games in the criterium in Jersey and a first appearance at the World Championships by a Bermudian in about ten years made for a fantastic year for Mayho.

The accomplishments of the women’s road-race team of Gabriella Arnold, Karen Bordage and Zoenique Williams at the Island Games when they won bronze in the criterium and silver in the road race did not go unnoticed as they claimed for the Female Rider of the Year award. Coincidentally, they also occupied the podium at the Bermuda Road Race Championships.

The Junior Rider of the Year award, sponsored by Winners Edge, was won by Matthew Oliveira who started the year winning the MTB Championships and then showed that he can be a tough competitor in the Adult A category, winning the points series on the back of consistent results.

The pinnacle of Oliviera’s year was the two silver medal performances at the Junior Caribbean Cycling Championships in the road race and time-trial in Dominican Republic.

The Most Improved Adult Rider was Che’quan Richardson who took two road-race series wins in a very competitive field and tied for third in the series overall.

His strong performances throughout the year made him the clear favourite for the award.

Kaden Hopkins took the Most Improved Junior Rider award who built on his strong mountain bike season last winter and moved into road racing with similar results.

Deborah Narraway was named the Race Official of the Year for her continued work overseeing the junior gearing requirements at the races.

Also recognised for their commitment to cycling was Butterfield Bank with their sponsorship of the Bermuda Grand Prix.

Team Bicycle Works were awarded the Race Organiser of the Year award for their efforts to create new and exciting racecourses, including the criterium in Hamilton and the Warwick-Paget road racecourse.
