Award for Bermuda Sloop Foundation

Sail training: on the Spirit of Bermuda (File photograph)

The Bermuda Sloop Foundation has been honoured in Canada for its excellence in sail training for young people.

The nonprofit organisation was named vessel operator of the year (small vessels) at the Sail Training International Conference in Quebec, its second win in the category after initially triumphing in 2007.

The BSF’s core programme provides free five-day voyages on its Spirit of Bermuda schooner, taking 18 students aged 11 to 14 years old and two teachers from the same school.

Roughly 4,000 students have boarded the vessel in the past decade to learn sailing techniques, teamwork and more.
