Students’ parents ‘none the wiser’

An extension of the school registration deadline by the Ministry of Education leaves parents “none the wiser” as they have still not been given full access to a report on possible school closure and consolidation.

This is the view of Bermuda Union of Teachers general secretary Mike Charles, who maintains that parents can make a fully informed decision only once they have seen the School Reorganisation (Score) report, delivered in full to minister Wayne Scott on January 13.

The ministry last week extended the deadline from Wednesday of this week to February 10, 11 and 12 in the wake of parental concern over possible school closures ahead.

While Mr Scott did not say when the full report would be made public, he did say he would “make an announcement on the actions during the week of February 8”.

Reacting, Mr Charles told The Royal Gazette: “Without the report an extension doesn’t give the parents anything. Unless they give them the report the parents are still in a position where they are not aware of what choices to make.

“Even if he says we are not going to close a school this year — until they have made a decision on what they are doing, parent are left in the lurch.

“I don’t have anything different to say than the last time we spoke because nothing has been done to change the situation. Parents are none the wiser.”

Bermudian parent Tia Smith added: “Extending the deadline without giving us the information leaves us in the same situation.

“They would be just as good keeping the original deadline. We need time to fully review the report after it is released.”

Pre-printed registration forms for children enrolled in the Bermuda public school system will be provided directly to children being registered for primary and middle school.

Registration forms for incoming students will be made available on the Department of Education’s website at www.moed.bm, and at the Department of Education at 14 Waller’s Point Road, St David’s.

For more information regarding public school registration, parents can contact the relevant school or the Department of Education at 278-3307 or 599-7849, or via e-mail at registration@moed.bm.

The ministry did not respond by press time.
