You wake up early on Valentine’s Day to pour all your love into making your sweetie a delicious feast.

Only problem is the pancakes are a little burnt, the fruit has turned soggy and your significant other isn’t looking too impressed.

Enter Kamilah Cannonier-Simons.

The 32-year-old owner of Sweet SAAK Bakery and her brother Ankoma will host a cooking demonstration next Saturday to take away the stress of the romantic ritual.

“We started doing breakfasts at the bakery on Sundays a few months ago and that has gone over really well,” Mrs Cannonier-Simons said. “I personally tend to be really picky about how my eggs are prepared. I like things a certain way, so I figured let’s have a class and give some tips and recipes and have people come to learn and have a good time.”

Pancakes are a favourite treat for the popular baker but even she doesn’t always get them right.

“Everyone has the occasional mishap in the kitchen,” she said. “One time I tried making pancakes for my husband, but they turned out all wrong. I forgot the baking powder and they didn’t rise. They were just these super flat and unattractive pancakes, it was horrible.”

Light and fluffy pancakes require a special technique: the pan should be hot, but not scorching. You’ll know it’s reached the right temperature when a water droplet skitters across.

“I usually find flipping the pancakes to be the hardest part. I’ve made a mess trying to do that before as well. My brother is a lot better at those things. He uses a wide spatula and actually makes them on a griddle rather than a pan. They come out great every time I have them.”

The baker’s advice for a romantic Valentine’s morning? Don’t rush the process.

“Another thing I suggest is for people to just have fun with it. People get a little stuffy when they think about things like this. They feel a lot of pressure, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Imagine what you would want if someone brought you breakfast in bed — and try your best to deliver on that.

“It doesn’t have to be complicated. I always add fresh fruits and berries and make sure everything lands on the plate straight from the pan so it’s fresh. That’s the best way to serve food in my opinion.”

Sweet SAAK’s cooking demonstration costs $50 per couple. People will receive basic recipes for breakfast staples such as pancakes and eggs.

Mrs Cannonier-Simons is hoping that those who attend will have the confidence to add their own touches when preparing the meal at home.

“For instance, you don’t always have to make plain scrambled eggs. That’s fine, but if you want to do a kale omelette we can give you tips on that as well,” she said.

“Breakfast can be really simple or a bit more elegant by adding a few more touches. You can add champagne and turn that drink into a bellini or a mimosa. If you want to add chocolate chips or apple cinnamon to your pancakes that’s all right too.

“There are so many options. You can serve a traditional juice like apple or orange or try something a little different like pomegranate. With the bacon there are choices as well — you could pan fry it or stick it in the oven to bake for a slightly different flavour.”

The St George’s bakery will hold an Anti-Valentine’s Day party next Friday to show people they can have fun with or without a partner.

Movies, pizza and a dessert buffet are all on offer.

“I’m not very big on Valentine’s Day personally,” Mrs Cannonier-Simons said. “As a baker I always have to work on special occasions so I don’t look for something that’s overly romantic. I just like to have a nice, normal night. Plus I have a lot of friends who aren’t married and don’t have a significant other. They feel there isn’t much to do on Valentine’s Day without feeling bad about themselves. We wanted to create something fun so the events could be attended as a couple on a date night or someone single just looking for something different to do. This won’t be your typical Valentine’s night out.”
