Team titles help Saltus end week on a high

Saltus Grammar School added another two cross-country titles to their collection for the week when they won the under-9 girls and over-9 boys divisions of the primary school races yesterday.

S’nya Cumbermack of Purvis Primary took the under-9 girls’ title when she completed the course, which started and finished at the National Stadium after taking the runners out to the Arboretum, in 9 min 44.06 sec in a sprint finish against Grace Rothwell of Saltus who clocked 9:45.62. Violet Clarke of Heron Bay was third in 9:52.85.

Saltus, with three runners in the top six, finished on 60 points, while Warwick Academy was second on 110 and Bermuda High School third on 145.

Malachi Belboda’s victory in the under-9 boys helped Somersfield Academy, take the team title with 91 points. Belboda broke the tape ahead of Jace Donawa of West End Primary in 8:52.76, while Donawa crossed in 8:58.82 and Zaedyn Philpott of Harrington Sound Primary third in 8:59.11. Saltus and West End tied on 108 points.

Jasmin Hasselkuss of Somersfield won her school’s second individual title when she won the over-9 girls’ race in 10:45.85 to avenge her narrow loss to Shayla Cann of Warwick Academy in the KPMG Front Street Mile last month. Cann won that race by four seconds but yesterday finished five seconds behind Hasselkuss while Anna Marcotte of Bermuda High School was third in 11:15.43.

Warwick Academy took the team title in the over-9 girls, finishing on 58 points while Somersfield totalled 89 and Saltus 107.

Paris-Mitchell Robinson of Elliot won the over-9 boys’ race in 9:48.5 with Nijain Thomas of West End second in 9:56.69 and Jake Brislane of Saltus, the Front Street Mile champion, third in 9:57.44.

Saltus took the team title with 46 points while Warwick Academy finished second on 64 and Harrington Sound third on 143.
