A spokesman for the Bermuda Football Association has condemned Saturday night’s firearms incident, as gunshots were fired after a match in Pembroke.

He also called on authority figures to step up their efforts in ensuring young men do not follow destructive and dangerous paths.

Police officers were called to BAA Field at 10.15pm, while a Bob Marley-themed party took place in the gymnasium next to the pitch. At the scene, Bermuda Police Service media representative Dwayne Caines told The Royal Gazette: “Upon police arrival, it was ascertained that an unknown male shot over the southern wall of the field at the end of the game between Ireland Island Rangers and BAA.

“No one was injured and the man made good his escape. The area has now been cordoned off and the investigation has commenced.

“Police are appealing for witnesses or anyone who has any information on what took place, and we’re especially interested in talking to anyone who may have seen suspicious people in the area.”

Yesterday, the BFA spokesman said that the association organises hundreds of matches every year for thousands of players and fans at a dozen locations, “in a wonderful sporting environment without incident”.

He added: “We urge parents, families and community leaders to get very involved in the lives of our young people, so they can steer them away from antisocial conduct.

“We trust that people will continue to attend games as this incident does not seem to be related to football.

“This kind of incident doesn’t belong at a sporting event or in the Bermuda community, where people could be harmed or affected. Let’s work towards peace and love.”
