Wilkinson eager to keep his players honest

On a mission: Quadir Maynard, the Hornets forward, goes on the attack against Boulevard in the FA Cup quarter-final at St John’s Field last weekend

Dandy Town Hornets are on a mission to reaffirm their reputation as the powerhouse of Bermudian football by sealing a Premier Division and FA Cup Double.

Hornets are in the midst of one of the most dominant Premier Division campaigns in recent memory, with Jomar Wilkinson’s side nine points clear at the top of the table with six matches remaining.

They are also favourites to win a third successive FA Cup after thrashing in-form Boulevard Blazers 5-1 in last weekend’s quarter-final at St John’s Field.

Wilkinson has been by far and away the island’s most successful coach in the past few seasons, winning the FA Cup and Dudley Eve Trophy in 2014-15, and lifting the league title, FA Cup and Dudley Eve Trophy in 2013-14.

He admits his biggest challenge for the rest of the season is to ensure complacency does not set in and that his players remain focused on completing their duel assignments.

“We still know it’s mathematically possible for us to lose the league,” said Wilkinson, a former Hornets and Wolves midfielder.

“We’re going to stay focused and take it one game at a time. The fat lady hasn’t sung yet so we have to keep going and stay on track.

“It’s hard to keep players honest and I’m sure every coach has experienced that stage when players want to take their foot off the pedal at the wrong time.

“We’re just trying to keep our players focused and honest. If they do that we stand a good chance of being successful this season.”

Town have scored 13 more goals and conceded six less than any other side during the Premier Division season.

It is his side’s defensive steel that Wilkinson is most proud, believing their watertight backline, leaking just 11 goals in 12 league games, is the main reason for their commanding campaign.

“My team understands that defence wins championships,” Wilkinson said. “That was a part of our game we wanted to improve this season and I’m very proud we’ve managed to achieve that so far.

“I think that improvement is a big reason why we find ourselves top of the league and in the semi-finals of the FA Cup.

“Now we’re just looking to end our season on a high.”

Hornets continue their title push on Friday against Devonshire Cougars at Devonshire Recreation Club. Kick off is at 9pm.

Cougars are still in relegation trouble despite an upturn in results.

Kwame Steede’s side climbed to eighth in the table after hammering Devonshire Colts 5-0 at Police Field in their last league match to leave them four points above the drop zone.

They also advanced to the FA Cup semi-finals after a 5-0 victory against First Division side Young Men’s Social Club.
