Pathways to residency question

Michael Fahy, Minister of Home Affairs, announced new pathways to residency last week (File photograph)

Dear Sir,

I intend to be brief as I comment and question.

The Roman Senate endured for more than 1,000 years and comprised older, experienced men. The late senator Albert Jackson is one Bermudian example, but our Senate consists of some who do not meet this criterion.

The recent proposal to broaden pathways to residency in Bermuda, while seemingly magnanimous, prompts me to ask why those affected have not already sought status or left.

I just learnt that Willard Duncan Vandiver spoke the words “ ... frothy eloquence neither convinces nor satisfies me. I’m from Missouri, and you have got to show me”. I would therefore like to see the European Convention on Human Rights for myself.

St Paul signed his death warrant by claiming Roman citizenship, but I am not deterred as I am proud to be a Bermudian, aged 79 and coloured white — as all of us are coloured something.

Yours faithfully, ROGER SNAPE
