Jewellery thief gets two years in prison

A Paget woman has been sentenced to two years in prison for stealing then attempting to sell $9,900 worth of jewellery.

Trimiea Rowland, 27, also stole a Louis Vuitton handbag worth $500 after breaking into a property in Wellington Hill, St George’s.

In Magistrates’ Court this morning, the defendant pleaded not guilty to two charges: one of trespassing and theft, and another of handling stolen goods.

However, 15 minutes after being granted $5,000 bail by Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo, Rowland changed both pleas to guilty.

The court heard that on February 9 last year, the complainant had left her home for work at 8.45am to go to work, but had left the door unlocked as she had forgotten their keys.

At 11.30am, a neighbour of the victim spotted Rowland in the area and recognised her from several weeks previously, as she had been acting suspiciously.

At 1.15pm, the neighbour saw the defendant again - this time as she was trying to sell jewellery and the designer handbag to members of the public.

When police officers arrived at the scene, Rowland fought them as she resisted arrest.

The victim, who returned home later that day to find several rooms in her house ransacked, was then handed back her stolen items.

The prosecution explained that Rowland had prior convictions for dishonesty, including one for stealing a grilled cheese sandwich last year.

“I’d like to apologise for wasting the Crown’s time. I’m remorseful,” said Rowland. “It’s called growing up and taking responsibility for your own actions.”
