Artist’s mural to be unveiled at hotel

Art project: Elbow Beach Hotel (File photograph by Akil Simmons)

A mural by local artist Graham Foster detailing the history of the Elbow Beach Hotel is set to be unveiled on the property this afternoon.

The mural will cover two 100 square foot walls by the hotel’s newly renovated conference rooms. The first wall is decorated with a depiction of the hotel’s early history, spanning from 1908 to the 1940s, while the second continues the timeline until the 1990s.

Mr Foster, who has previously produced murals for the Bermuda National Museum and the Bermuda College, said: “When I was first approached about the Elbow Beach Hotel mural project, the first thing I thought was how I was going to fill such a large area with the history of just one hotel.

“As it turned out there was nothing to worry about, as the hotel has an amazing multifaceted history spanning over 100 years. I wanted the mural to have fluidity to it, providing a smooth transition from each historical scene to the next, so I opted for a surreal, more sinuous style utilising a curving, undulating line. Although many things in the mural are distorted, they are still recognisable. This style is also far more fun to paint, than a more traditional take would be.”

Along with the history of the hotel, Mr Foster said he has included several elements of wider Bermudian history, such as historical aircraft and ships, Gombeys, Miles ice cart, Teddy Tucker’s wreck-spotting balloon and local wildlife. “To avoid the mural being too dry and historical, I try to add some humour, such as a man being stung by a Portuguese man o’ war, and a 1950s tourist on an out of control Zundapp,” he added.
