Bermuda’s women make winning start

Bermuda Dark & Stormy in Las Vegas

Bermuda’s women made a winning start to their Las Vegas Sevens campaign yesterday.

The Dark & Stormys won two and lost one at the invitational event, earning themselves a place in today’s cup quarter-finals.

Two tries from Lauren Rothwell got Bermuda off to the perfect start as they beat Avalon 25-0, with Mika Tomita, the captain, Erica McArthur and Jessica Cassidy also touching down.

The second game was a much closer affair with Cassidy scoring a try and adding two conversions in a narrow 19-15 win.

Bermuda slipped to defeat in their final game of the day, falling 17-12 to Atlanta Harlequins with Harlequins scoring the winning try in the last seconds of the game. Amanda Swan and Tomita scored tries for Bermuda, with Cassidy again kicking the extras.

• The men’s season nears an end on Sunday with the semi-finals of the Nicol Shield at North Field, the National Sports Centre.

Having won the league last weekend, Renegades will be looking to do the double for the second year running.

The defending champions take on Police, with the men in blue looking for some small measure of revenge after letting the title slip through their fingers.

In the other semi-final, Teachers will face a Mariners side who have struggled with injuries over the past couple of weeks.

The women’s Scully Cup has been put back a week due to the Dark & Stormys’s involvement in the Las Vegas tournament. Those games will take place next weekend with Teachers taking on Renegades and Mariners playing Police.
