Warwick Academy students are highlighting their artistic efforts today as part of their Practical Arts Department Showcase.

The show will feature work from Year 10 and 11 GCSE students, along with Year 12 and Year 13 IB students.

A spokeswoman for the school said the exhibit itself was part of the examination process and would make up a part of the student’s final grade.

“What is on exhibit is only part of the work that the students have to produce for their complete portfolio,” she said. “Standard level students must exhibit seven pieces and the higher level students must exhibit 11 pieces in total. The students pick pieces that they feel represent the best of the theme that they have chosen for their portfolio and these will be on display from today until March 18.”

Alyssa Hayward felt the hardest part was “to come up with an idea for my portfolio and then pulling the pieces from all the work I have done to display in the exhibition”.

Celine Morton said her work was inspired by her experiences working with Habitat for Humanity, building homes in Malawi, Africa.

Sammy Dill said her overall theme was characters with three of her pieces being related to characters that are written in stories.

The one dramatic piece of a deer, Sammy said, was intended as a comparative study between the two artists Caitlin Hackett and Peter Deligdisch.

“It is a comment how humans are much more related to animals than we think and it shows the decaying process,” she said. “If the animals start to rot then the humans are going to follow as well.”

Dan DeSilva, art teacher at Warwick Academy, said he was thrilled by the work created by the students.

“The level of work is impressive and I am also very pleased by the fact that they produced the amount of work they did in about 14 months,” he said.

“They had to push a lot out and they really came through.”

Opening night for the exhibition will take place from 4pm to 6pm today, with the budding artists and designers on hand to answer any questions about their studies and the design process that they have experienced.
