Bermuda’s Under-14 squad recorded their second straight victory in emphatic fashion at the International Tennis Federation World Junior Tennis tournament in El Salvador yesterday.

The island’s three-member team of Ricky Mallory Jr, Benjamin Jones and Nicholas Cooper swept the best-of-three group B tie against the US Virgin Islands 3-0 at the Federación Salvadorena de Tenis.

Jones put Bermuda in the driver’s seat after dispatching Kaiel Wheatley 6-0, 6-2 in the opening singles. Mallory, Bermuda’s No 1 player, then clinched the tie with a match to spare after getting past Adrian Ricketts 6-2, 6-0 in the remaining singles match.

Jones, Bermuda’s No 2 player, then teamed up with Cooper, who is making his international debut for Bermuda at the tournament, to win the doubles match 6-4, 6-1 and complete the sweep.

Gavin Manders, the Bermuda coach, kept things into perspective after watching his players chalk up a second victory in as many days.

“The boys won today against a very young and inexperienced team,” he said. “A good step in the right direction, but we will have to be better if we want to win the back draw against Panama, Jamaica or Barbados.”

Bermuda’s other win came against Curacao, who they beat 2-1 on Sunday, after suffering back-to-back defeats against eighth-seeded Nicaragua and second-seeded Bahamas in the opening two group matches.

“I am really proud of the team’s performance over the past few days, bouncing back from their losses against Nicaragua and Bahamas,” Ricky Mallory Sr, the Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association tennis director, said.

“They can win tomorrow [today] and I know coach Manders will be instilling that message to them in their team meeting.”
