Nathan Dill, the Bermuda Boxing Federation president, is confident of a knockout night of amateur boxing when some of the island’s best go toe-to-toe at CedarBridge Academy tomorrow night.

The second annual National Boxing Championships, the first to be organised by Dill and his team, will feature a four-bout card, with Tyler Christopher, of Controversy Gym, putting his undefeated record on the line in a welterweight battle against Omar Dill, of Forty Rego’s Gym, in the main event.

Also stepping between the ropes will be middleweights Zain Philpott, of the Bermuda Sanshou Association, and Robert Somner, of Controversy Gym, while Jason Lowe, of the BSA, takes on Shane Basden, also of Controversy, in a super-heavyweight bout. In the light-heavyweight division, Keanu Wilson, of the BSA, faces Coleman Mills, of Forty Rego’s.

With each bout, at least on paper, appearing to be evenly matched, Dill hopes to attract a bumper crowd to the event, with doors opening at 5pm.

“Although we didn’t get the likes of Corey Boyce and Stefan Dill in action, the people who know about the fight game are like ‘I can’t wait to see that one’,” said Dill, who was voted in as the BBF president last August.

“Tickets sales were slow at the start but things have been picking up as the momentum builds. We’re expecting a full house and it would be great for the boxers for it to be a sold-out event.”

Leo Richardson, the head coach at Controversy Gym, said he felt confident in the ability of his stable of boxers, although he admitted they were each facing a strong opponent.

“Their fights are certainly not going to be easy,” Richardson said. “It will be the hardest fight yet for each of my guys.

“There’s definitely going to be some interesting fights on the night. Tyler’s fight against Omar could be really interesting, so that will be main event.

“All of the fighters have been working really hard in the gym and are ready to go.”

Tickets are $45 for ringside, $30 for general admission, $20 for children, plus one child under-12 free with an adult. They are available from @MenCo, the Hub and bdatix.bm
