Mother launches murder appeal

A mother of three has launched an appeal against her conviction for murdering a teenage boy.

Kiahna Trott-Edwards, 32, was found guilty last year of murdering Shijuan Mungal by striking him around the head with a baseball bat during a confrontation outside her Warwick home on September 8, 2014. She was later jailed for life by Puisne Judge Charles-Etta Simmons, who ordered that Trott-Edwards would have to serve a minimum of eight years behind bars before she could be considered for parole.

It emerged yesterday that prosecutors have also appealed against the minimum term, arguing that it should be increased. The appeal is expected to be heard by the Court of Appeal in June, Prosecutors have also appealed against a decision made by Judge Simmons during the perjury trial of lawyer Kamal Worrell.

The judge ruled that Mr Worrell, who denied persuading a witness to give false evidence to prevent the conviction of his client, had no case to answer in the trial in which he and two other defendants stood charged.

That appeal is also expected to be heard by the Court of Appeal in June.

Meanwhile a former police officer has also appealed against his conviction for sexually exploiting his daughter and committing incest. The man, who can not be named for legal reasons, has also appealed against the 15-year prison sentence he was given. Four other defendants have appealed against their convictions.

Jahkeo LeShore and Darrion Simons have lodged appeals against their convictions for the 2011 premeditated murder of David Clarke. Both men were jailed for life after being found guilty and told they would serve at least 25 years behind bars before becoming eligible for parole. Josef Smith, 27, has appealed against his conviction for aggravated burglary and discharging a firearm as well as the 14-year prison sentence that was imposed.

Finally Javon Weeks, who was jailed for four years for attacking a teenager, has also appealed against his conviction and sentence.
