Butterfield shares record strong gains

Big move: The Royal Gazette/BSX Index surged past 2,000 last week

Butterfield Bank’s share price surged 4.7 per cent last week to propel The Royal Gazette/BSX Index past the 2,000 mark.

The bank closed the week at $33.50, up $1.50 during the five days of trading. The spike came as 17,719 shares changed hands. Butterfield shares trading on the New York Stock Exchange closed at $33.90 on Friday.

The index climbed 66.21 points, or 3.27 per cent, to close on 2,023.6. Bermuda Stock Exchange trading volume totalled 63,390 shares and turnover was $917,060.15.

Three other stocks joined Butterfield in the gains column, while three stocks saw their share prices dip.

Watlington Waterworks climbed 1 per cent to $20.50, while insurers Argus and BF&M each gained 0.2 per cent.

Bermuda Aviation Services fell 20 cents, or 6.3 per cent, to close on $3 on the trading of 3,500 shares.

Ascendant Group, owner of power utility Belco, fell 10 cents, or 1.4 per cent, to $7.20 as 10,141 shares traded. Telecommunications firm KeyTech dropped 1 cent to $2.50.
