Bank stocks rise

Butterfield Bank and HSBC Holdings both improved on The Royal Gazette/BSX Index last week

Shares valued at more than $1 million were traded on The Royal Gazette/BSX Index last week.

Bank stocks fared best, with HSBC Holdings improving by 20 cents, or 2.38 per cent, to $8.60 after 7,357 traded.

Butterfield Bank shares also rose, going up 60 cents, or 1.9 per cent, to $32.70 after 27,054 were exchanged. On the New York Stock Exchange the bank’s shares ended the week at $33.01.

The only other stock to move on the local exchange during last week was Ascendant Group, which was down 10 cents, or 1.4 per cent, at $7.15 after 5,900 traded.

The Royal Gazette/BSX Index closed at 1,988.17, 26.02 points up, or 1.3 per cent.

The BSX Insurance Index closed the week at 1,852.83, up 1.99 points, or 0.11 per cent.
