Butterfield drives full-week BSX rally

The Royal Gazette/BSX Index gained almost 3.7 per cent last week

The Royal Gazette/BSX Index climbed almost 3.7 per cent last week after gaining ground on each of the five trading days.

Butterfield Bank, the index’s largest component, was the biggest driver of the rally. Butterfield climbed $1.50, or 4.4 per cent, on the trading of 15,013 shares, as it closed the week on a new 52-week high of $35.50.

Butterfield’s New York Stock Exchange-listed shares ended Friday at an all-time closing high of $36.57.

Three other stocks also rose.

One Communications Ltd made the biggest leap, climbing 39 cents, or 15 per cent, to close at $2.99, a 52-week high.

Ascendant Group, owner of power utility Belco, which on Friday announced half-year net income of more than $10 million, closed the week on $9 after a climb of 40 cents, or 4.7 per cent.

Financial-services holding company Somers Ltd, owner of Bermuda Commercial Bank, gained 25 cents, or 1.9 per cent to close on $13.75.

The BSX Index added 77.96 points to close the week on 2.121.17. Trading volume was 33,713 shares, while turnover totalled $691,449.10.
