Nearly $1m of Butterfield shares trade

The Royal Gazette/BSX Index rose more than 2.2 per cent for the week, fuelled by a sharp increase in Ascendant's share price

Nearly $1 million worth of Butterfield Bank shares traded on the Bermuda Stock Exchange.

The bank closed unchanged on $35 as 28,500 shares worth $997,500 changed hands.

Butterfield’s US-listed shares gained 82 cents, or 2.33 per cent in New York Stock Exchange trading.

The Royal Gazette/BSX Index closed unchanged on 2,194.83. For the week, the index rose 49.78 points, or 2.26 per cent, driven by Ascendant Group, whose 14.3 per cent rise represented the second successive week of double-digit gains for the stock.

Ascendant, which announced last month that it is considering strategic options including a sale of the company, has gained more than 31 per cent in the three weeks since, climbing from $16.75 to $22.

Other climbers over the five days of trading were Butterfield, which gained 1.4 per cent, and BF&M Ltd, which added 0.6 per cent.

The BSX Insurance Index slipped 35.6 points, or 2.31 per cent, to close on 1,504.96.
