How to get the best from virtual training

Home fitness: set yourself up to succeed (Image courtesy of www.totalshape.com)

Virtual training has added another dimension to personal fitness. It took me a few weeks to figure out the logistics of camera placement, sound, etc and since we are all new to this virtual experience of working out, I wanted to share a few tips on how to maximise your online sessions. 1, Try using the largest device that you have to view the instructor as opposed to a cell phone; you’ll be able to see the instructor more easily. On most apps such as Zoom, you can view the class in “gallery view” so you can see all the participants in case you missed a snippet of the trainer’s instructions. 2, Give yourself about ten minutes to set up your camera before your session. Try and position it so that you can be seen at a slightly higher vantage point to allow a full body standing position and a full body laying/floor position. Whatever you can see on the screen, your trainer will also see. 3, Make sure your microphone is on in your private personal training sessions so that you and your trainer can chat freely. However, in group classes, after the general salutations and chatting has finished, make sure your mic is on silent to minimise background noise that could distract others. If you have questions you can type them in the chat or turn your mic on for a short period. 4, Turn your camera on. Pretend that you are at the gym when you are attending your virtual session. You wouldn’t hide behind the shower curtain and workout, would you? We love to see everyone’s smiling face on camera so we can correct your form and engage with you. However, if you are prone to a bit of nude home exercise, then go ahead and opt for the “camera off” switch. 5, Arrive early, just as if you were at the gym. Have your water, weights, mat and a smile ready for your workout. Most virtual apps have a “waiting room” that you can be in while you get yourself all set up and ready. 6, If your sound is sketchy, try closing the doors to the room you are in. Disconnect all devices from your wi-fi connection for the duration of the class to improve streaming quality. If you still have issues, you could also stream from your hotspot on your phone (only during shelter in place as we are not using our data). Using Bluetooth headphones with a built-in mic can improve your sound tremendously. 7, Music enhances your exercise experience. Don’t forget your tunes in your private PT sessions. Crank the music up, as long as you can still hear your trainer. I truly miss my clients and physical classes. However, we will continue on this path as long as it takes to keep us all safe.
