Cinco de Mayo to benefit young Bermudians

Boxers and businessmen: Crockwell, of Security Association, met with BBF vice-president Leo Richardson to discuss the security firm’s investment in the Youth Boxing Academy. The meeting turned into a fun sparring match at Controversy Gym

Mexico comes to Bermuda this Cinco de Mayo weekend, with Security Associates, in conjunction with Bermuda Boxing Federation, hosting the first “One World Bermuda Boxing Festival” at the North Field, National Sports Centre.

Part of the proceeds from Nikki Bascome’s six-round professional welterweight bout with Mexico’s David Rangel will go to the BBF’s Youth Boxing Academy.

Nathan Dill, the BBF president, said: “One of our goals was to ensure continuous opportunities for our member gyms and athletes to compete and this event will represent Bermuda’s first truly international boxing event.

“One World Boxing Festival signifies the value of sport in creating positive interactions among athletes worldwide and we are proud to host this event.

“The BBF introduced the Youth Boxing Academy with the mission of introducing life skills needed to excel, while developing the art of boxing in Bermuda.”

Dr Carlton C Crockwell, the Security Associates chief executive officer, said: “With part proceeds directed to the Youth Boxing Academy and the Coalition for the Protection of Children, the benefits to our community have been well demonstrated. As the monies raised will go towards holistic development of our young leaders in the ring and the community — the future of Bermuda’s boxing community is assured through the Youth Boxing Academy.”

Supporting sponsors include Rosa’s, Gorhams, Intelisign, Universal Security Alliance, Metamorphosis Consulting, Barrits, One Communications, Keen Ltd, Sound Concepts, and Gatorade.

In an effort to encourage the development of boxing, Dill has encouraged the community to engage in the social-media festivities, including the Rumble 2 Win Contest, offering the opportunity to win two free ringside tickets, as well as a HomeSafe Package from Security Associates.

Melissa Looby, the BBF programme and event co-ordinator, said: “Boxing in Bermuda represents an opportunity for the community to come out and support our own.

“Our athletes have immense talent, and events like these offer the chance for our athletes to encounter talent that will increase their exposure and raise the bar.”

The undercard of Saturday’s fight includes several amateur bouts including Courtney Dublin v Jaylon Roberts; Matthew Tannock vs Gary Martinez; Robert Somner v Victor Santos; Zain Philpott v Kristan Browne; Tyler Christopher v Corey Moore; and Andre Lambe v Markees Hines.

General admission costs $60 and $95 for ringside, with tickets available at Caesar’s Pharmacy, Sports R Us, Hunt’s, and ptix.bm. For more information, e-mail bermudaboxingfed@gmail.com.
