Local amateur welterweight Andre Lambe has pulled out of this week’s Royal Bermuda Regiment boxing night.

Trainer Allan “Forty” Rego revealed yesterday that the southpaw, who is presently serving in the RBR, has withdrawn because of safety concerns.

“Andre is not fighting,” Rego said. “He was supposed to, but then they wanted him to fight a guy who has fought 60 fights and I objected because it doesn’t make sense putting a guy with six fights in there with a guy who has had 60.”

The promising Lambe scored a unanimous points win over American Corey Moore in his previous outing in the ring at the National Sports Centre in May.

Rego also confirmed that Tyler Christopher, Lambe’s stablemate who is also a southpaw, has also withdrawn.

Orthodox fighter Jaylon Roberts, who also fights out of Rego’s Gym, remains keen to fight against a more experienced opponent despite being advised not to by his trainer.

“The guy he is fighting is supposed to have 20 fights and he has only had three,” Rego said.

The Royal Bermuda Regiment boxing night will feature airmen from Britain’s Royal Air Force, soldiers from the Jamaica Defence Force, officer cadets from the US Naval Academy in Maryland as well as RBR soldiers.

The amateur boxing card was originally slated to be held over two nights at two different venues but will now be held on one night instead.

Organisers were forced to cancel tomorrow’s event at Warwick Camp after the JDF fighters were unable to fly out in time because of the after-effects of Hurricane Irma.

“It is with regret we have had to cancel the Thursday event, but Irma has caused almost unprecedented disruption in the Caribbean area,” RBR Major Ben Beasley said.

Saturday’s fight night at the Berkeley Institute Gymnasium will go ahead as planned and will include the JDF boxers.

“We will be organising a collection for hurricane relief at the tournament, so it’s not only a great night’s entertainment but a chance to help make a difference to our family, friends and neighbours in the Caribbean who have suffered so much in the past few days,” Beasley said.

“We would encourage the public to come out to Saturday’s event and show their support for the JDF and Bermuda’s soldiers, who are deploying to the Caribbean to help in hurricane relief operations.”

Tickets for tomorrow’s cancelled fights will remain valid for Saturday’s event and can be refunded.
